The Εθνικη Τραπεζα Της Ελλαδος (National Bank of Greece, NBG) was established by Swiss banker Jean-Gabriel Eynard and Greek banker Georgios Stavros on 30 March 1841 and began operations on 22 January 1842. Stavros was elected the first governor and his portrait would appear on most NBG issues. The bank held the exclusive right to issue notes until 1928, when the Bank of Greece was established as the sole issuer of Greek banknotes.
