These low-denomination notes were issued by the Βασιλειον Της Ελλαδος (Kingdom of Greece, KOG) because the National Bank of Greece was authorized to issue only larger denomination notes. These notes were needed to replace coins that were unavailable due to metal shortages during World War I.
The Greek monarchy was abolished between 1924 and 1935. On 25 November 1935, the monarchy was restored and King George II returned to the throne. The Greek monarchy would eventually be abolished forever on 1 June 1973.
