The Ningpo Commercial Bank Limited (行銀月四海上) series of China National Banks in the World Currency contains 15 distinct entries.
The Ningpo Commercial Bank Limited (NIN) opened on 11 September 1908 in Shanghai with a total paid-in capital of 500,000 taels, all from private sources. The Chinese original of the bank’s name translates as Shanghai Mount Siming Bank, Mount Siming being the famous mountain in Zhejiang province which features prominently on many of the bank’s issues. It is not known when the Ningpo Commercial Bank ceased trading, but its building still stands in Shanghai. The modern bank, Ningbo Commercial Bank Company, is an unrelated institution. Banknote issues of the Ningpo Commercial Bank are complicated by the fact that its Chinese name appears both with and without the initial 上海 (Shanghai), while it has three different English translations: Ningpo Commercial Bank Limited, Ningpo Commercial Bank, and Ningpo Commercial & Savings Bank Limited. The bank altered these combinations five times, twice reverting back to a previous name. In total, three different Chinese-English combinations are available on the issued notes. These are summarized in the table below.
