The Chinese Engineering & Mining Co. series of China Foreign Banks in the World Currency contains 4 distinct entries.
The Chinese Engineering & Mining Company (CEM) was founded in 1879 to mine coal for Chinese steamships. The first shaft was sunk at Tongshan (Tangshan) in modern Hebei province, whose name appears on all notes. CEM was listed as a public company in London in 1912. Its activities were halted after the Communist Revolution of 1949 and the company dissolved in 1984.
