1980-S Proof Set Cent-$1 PR 6 Coins Values

Details

Original Packaging: The coins were mounted in a red plastic insert that was fitted between an upper and lower casing of transparent plastic. These parts were set within a black plastic frame bearing on its lower border the words UNITED STATES PROOF SET in silver letters. The frame included a slot into which the transparent casing could be inserted for desktop display. A black cardboard box housed the assembled set, and the words “UNITED STATES PROOF SET • 1980” were printed on it in silver script.

This holder, while appearing superficially similar to that used for the several years previous, was smaller in width. The hole for the Anthony dollar was of suitable diameter, permitting this size reduction. This style of holder was used through 1982, after which time the suspension of dollar coinage prompted its retirement.

Commentary: Though a failure as a circulating coin, the popularity of the Anthony dollar with collectors maintained high sales for this year’s Proof set. In addition, the numismatic market overall was very hot in 1980, as investors and speculators sought to dodge the effects of double-digit inflation by putting money into coins. This may have contributed to high Proof set sales in 1980.

Sharp-eyed collectors may be able to spot the scarce and desirable repunched mintmark variety found on some of the 1980-S Proof dollars. This is a nice premium variety, though a lack of sale records makes pricing them difficult.

Cameo and ultra cameo coins are the rule, rather than the exception, for this date. They are still scarce in the higher grades, the cents in particular being difficult to find with full red color and no spotting or tarnishing.
