The United States utilized a two-cent coin for just ten years, from 1864 to 1873.
Long considered one of the key issues in the Pioneer Gold series, the 1849-dated Mormon $10s were struck on December 12th and 19th, 1848, making them the first coins made using native California gold. Eleven examples have been traced, six of which are impounded in museums. Another five have been authenticated by third party grading services, with the two finest specimens grading AU, and the others ranging from Fine to XF. It is believed that only 46 examples were struck. As a rule, they tend to be somewhat softly struck – particularly on the reverse, showing little or no detail on the exposed thumb, and some amount of weakness in the date.
