The Chartered Bank (TCB) is the successor to the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, which was founded by Scotsman James Wilson following the grant of a royal charter by Queen Victoria on 29 December 1853. It opened its first Hong Kong branch in 1859, and was authorized to issue notes in 1862, a privilege it continues to exercise (as Standard Chartered) to present day.
