In 1867, the bank began issuing notes in denominations of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 dollars, with a common design of black frame and lettering on front with the denomination numeral and dollar signs in blue underprint. e back of each note features the colonial coat of arms on guilloches and is differentiated by unique colors for each denomination.
These notes bear the issuer name as the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. The partially printed date is intended to be filled in by hand, as are the signatures of the bank’s accountant and manager; serial numbers are printed. Early notes have the title Manager at lower right front; later notes have the title Chief Manager.
