The history of Standard Chartered in Hong Kong dates as far back as 1859, and is one of the Hong Kong’s three note- issuing banks today (the other two being the Bank of China and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation). Having incorporated its local business on 1 July 2004, it now operates as a licensed bank under the name of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Standard Chartered PLC.
