The Banco Nacional de San Carlos series of Spain in the World Currency contains 15 distinct entries.
The first known paper money of Spain were vales reales (royal vouchers) issued pursuant to decree of 20 September 1780, but they were not well accepted by the public. To address this, the Banco Nacional de San Carlos (National Bank of Saint Charles, BSC) was founded in Madrid on 2 June 1782 by a royal warrant signed by King Carlos III. The new bank issued cédulas pursuant to royal decree of 5 January 1783.
