The Bank of Scotland series of Scotland in the World Currency contains 1119 distinct entries.

The Bank of Scotland (BOS) was established on 17 July 1695 by Act of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. It opened for business in April 1696. After the Sveriges Riksbank of Sweden and the Bank of England, it is the world’s third third oldest operational note-issuing bank. It was initially granted a 21-year monopoly, but for reasons unknown this was not renewed, allowing the establishment of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS: B401). In its early decades, the Bank of Scotland was generally seen to have Jacobite leanings (i.e. the belief that the monarchs of the United Kingdom from the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89 onwards were not the legitimate rulers) and to this day, most unusually for a UK bank, a royal portrait has never appeared on its banknotes.

“P” preceding a signature title stands for “pro,” meaning the signatory is acting on behalf of the actual official who holds that title.
