The Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) was incorporated by a New Zealand Act of the General Assembly on 29 July 1861, and opened New Zealand branches in Auckland (October 1861), Dunedin (October 1861), Invercargill (May 1862), Nelson (January 1862), New Plymouth (November 1861), Picton (January 1862), and Wellington (January 1862). The bank also opened branches in other international cities, including London (October 1862), Melbourne (1872), Sydney (1875), Newcastle (1876), Suva (1876), and Adelaide (1883).
