On 1 July 1953, Bank Indonesia (BI) was founded by the central bank Act No.11 of 1953, taking over the responsibilities of the previously nationalized De Javasche Bank. Until 1968, the issuance of coins and 1- and 2½-rupiah banknotes was the responsibility of the Republik Indonesia (RI), whereas higher denomination notes were issued by the Bank Indonesia (BI). In 1968, BI was granted the sole right to issue banknotes and coins. For more information, visit www.bi.go.id.
