In spring 1916, the Military Affairs Department of the Republic of China ordered the Yunnan Province miliary forces, the Guangdong Province military forces, and the Guangxi Province military forces to create a joint army in order to carry out a Northern Expedition against Yuan Shikai in Jiangxi Province. Yuan Shikai (1859 - 1916) had been the first president of the Republic of China in 1912, but in December 1915 had set up himself as the new emperor (see B1015 commemorative issue). This joint army was named the Yunnan-Guangdong-Guangxi United Army for Jiangxi Relief (YGG).
