Values / U.S. Coins / Colonial & Post-Colonial Issues

Pre-Federal coinage represents a rich part of American history. This area includes coins struck by the original U.S. colonies and privately-issued tokens which were accepted as payment in commerce. Additionally, you may find it surprising to learn that the majority of coinage circulating in the 17th, 18th and early 19th century was issued by foreign governments -- primary from Spain, England, and France -- as these coins were considered to be more legitimate than our domestically-produced coins.
