(1834-42) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold MS 70 GR, 20C, K-13 Values
Details
The 70-grain, 20-carat $2 1/2 appears to be the earliest of Bechtler’s small format, “pill”-style quarter eagles and can be found from a perfect state of both dies. Like the earliest half eagle (K-Transitional) struck to the post-1834 standard, the pill-style quarter eagles omit Bechtler’s initial on the reverse. Somewhere around 30 examples of this variety are known, with a handful of mint state pieces comprising the condition census.
