Obverse: Liberty Head facing left, coronet inscribed LIBERTY and with star. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around border, 1869 below.

Reverse: Thin laurel wreath enclosing Roman numeral V, ribbon inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST, with small Maltese cross near the top (as earlier used on J-631 of 1868).
