The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the $2.50 Liberty Gold, Proof (1840–1907) series of Pre-1933 Gold Coinage in the U.S. Coins contains 2 distinct entries with CPG® values between $1,650.00 and $28,800.00.

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the so-called Liberty head design was widely adopted for gold coinage starting in 1840 for the quarter-eagle ($2.50) denomination. Proof examples were struck in Philadelphia, mostly from 1856-1907. Earlier proof issues are known, but are exceedingly rare.
