On 20 March 1956, Tunisia achieved independence from France. On 19 September 1958, the Banque Centrale de Tunisie (Central Bank of Tunisia, BCT) was created by the enactment of Act n° 58-90. On 3 November 1958, the bank began its activity with the establishment of the Tunisian dinar as a unit of account, replacing the Tunisian franc at a rate of 1:1,000.
