On 28 April 1954, France formally granted Vietnam full independence. The Geneva Accords, signed on 21 July 1954, established the division between Ho Chi Minh’s Democratic Republic of Vietnam (commonly called North Vietnam) and Bao Dai’s Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam).
