The Pathet Lao Government series of Laos in the World Currency contains 17 distinct entries.
In April 1968, the communist Pathet Lao forces began circulating these notes—reportedly printed in a cave in Vieng Xai, Laos or in Shanghai in the People’s Republic of China—in the northern and eastern areas of the country then under the insurgents’ control. Following the Pathet Lao’s takeover of the country in 1975, the monarchy was abolished and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic was established. These notes were subsequently accepted as legal tender throughout Laos, with the Royal “Khangkhai” kip exchanged for the Pathet Lao “Liberation” kip at the rate of 20 to 1.
