Under Decree No. 600 of 13 May 1920, the Banca d’Italia (Italian: Bank of Italy, BDI) began issuing legal tender buoni di cassa (cash certificates) denominated in rupie (rupees). 2 million rupees were authorized to be printed at the bank’s printing works in Rome under the oversight of the Treasury, but 5.6 million rupees were actually produced through 1925. By decree the notes were convertible into silver, but convertibility was suspended immediately after issue.
