Under Decree No. 600 of 13 May 1920, the Banca d’Italia (Italian: Bank of Italy, BDI) began issuing legal tender buoni di cassa (cash certificates) denominated in rupie (rupees). 2 million rupees were authorized to be printed at the bank’s printing works in Rome under the oversight of the Treasury, but 5.6 million rupees were actually produced through 1925.
