The functions and responsibilities of a central bank were assumed by the Magyar Királyi Állami Jegyintézet (Royal Hungarian State Bank), which was established on 11 July 1921.
The first independent Hungarian central bank, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (Hungarian National Bank), was established on 24 June 1924. For more information, visit www.mnb.hu.
From 1922 to 1925, Magyar Pénzjegynyomda Részvénytársaság (Hungarian Banknote Printing Company) printed all the notes for the state. In 1925, Magyar Nemzeti Bank purchased the printer, and the name changed to Pénzjegynyomda Rt. (Banknote Printing Company). This firm was the primary printer for all Hungarian notes, though during the hyperinflation periods, other unknown printers also supplied notes to meet demand. In 1993, it became a private company, with the designation Pénzjegynyomda Zrt. For more information, visit www.penzjegynyomda.hu.
