Before German unification, Saxony had its own state bank (Notenbank) and state currency, which was was replaced by the mark upon unification. The former Notenbank had its note-issuing privileges curtailed until, by 1906, only four were still issuing banknotes. Sächsische Bank zu Dresden (SBD), founded in 1865, was one of these. Its note-issuing privileges were revoked in 1935. After the German surrender in 1945, Dresden became part of the Soviet Zone and in 1947 the bank and all its assets were liquidated. For earlier issues, see Saxony.
