On 1 March 1948, the American, British, and French military governments established the Bank deutscher Länder (German: Bank of the German States, BDL) as the central bank and sole issuing authority for the western occupation zones of Germany. All of the notes dated 1948 were issued by its authority, but only some of these notes carried the bank’s name.
