The Liberty $5 gold half eagle "with motto" continues the primary design of Christian Gobrecht with the major addition of the words ("IN GOD WE TRUST") emblazoned on a ribbon on the reverse above the eagle's head. This revised design spanned from 1866 through the termination of the Liberty design in 1907.

These coins weigh in at 0.24 ounces (8.359 grams) and 90% purity (10% copper), these coins were well circulated and struck at numerous mints including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, Denver, and San Francisco.
