In 1855, El Banco Español de la Habana (The Spanish Bank of Havana, BEH) was granted a 25-year charter to issue notes in Cuba. In 1881, the charter expired and the bank reorganized and was renamed El Banco Español de la Isla de Cuba (Spanish Bank of the Island of Cuba, BEC), but continued to issue notes bearing its old name until 1896. By the end of the Spanish-American War (21 April 1898 - 13 August 1898), the bank closed and its notes became worthless.
