2024-(W) 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Dollar PR DCAM Gold, 230 Privy Values

Details

The U.S. Mint is recognized the 230th anniversary of the 1794 Flowing Hair dollar with a gold coin and silver medal. The Flowing Hair dollar was the first dollar coin issued by the United States. The 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin is a replica of the original dollar, re-sculpted by Mint medallic artists.

As a tribute to the number of years that have elapsed since the Flowing Hair dollar coin was introduced, the Mint will also auction 230 one ounce, high relief, 24-karat gold coins with a “230” privy mark on December 12, 2024. The first coin will be auctioned with the die in a custom-made display box. Each of the coins will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity hand-signed by the Honorable Ventris C. Gibson, Director of the United States Mint.

The auction firm of Stack's Bowers was selected to auction the entire mintage of 230 coins on December 12, 2024. All coins were first graded by PCGS and all achieved a grade of Proof 69 or Proof 70 DCAM. Each coin was slabbed in a special label with its emission order included. The first coin produced was auctioned with the actual obverse and reverse production dies (permanently canceled).

Obverse: The obverse is a faithful rendition of the first dollar struck by the United States Federal Government. The obverse presents the original 1794 dollar with an updated “2024” date and retains the “LIBERTY” inscription. The portrait of Liberty faces right and is surrounded by 15 stars, representing the fifteen states that had ratified the Constitution by 1794.

Reverse: The reverse depicts a laurel wreath surrounding an eagle with spread wings in the center, an early predecessor of the American heraldic eagle.
