This semi-key date is widely available in the circulated grades but becomes significantly more difficult to locate in Mint State, especially in the Gem vicinity of MS65 or better. With fewer than 1,000 Red specimens believed to exist, the 1919-S Lincoln cent keeps enthusiasts looking far and wide, with many registry set collectors dropping big bucks for the rare opportunity to purchase a top piece in the MS66 range.
Obverse: Bust of Abraham Lincoln framed by IN GOD WE TRUST on the top periphery. The word LIBERTY to the left of the portrait and the date and mintmark (If any) positioned on the right side.
Reverse: Wheat ears flanking the words ONE CENT, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM on the top perimeter.
