1888-O Scarface One Dollar MS VAM 1B4 Values
Details
The 1888-O Scarface Morgan dollar is an exceptionally popular variety showcasing a die crack that runs across Miss Liberty's face, spanning from the obverse rim in the 10 o'clock position down through Liberty's lower hair curls and beyond. Some of these pieces are early state die cracks, others late to terminal, and it is the latter versions that are normally considered true scar face coins, with prices conceivably higher for those pieces where the die crack is not nearly as evident. There are four distinct die states of this variety labeled 1B1, 1B2, 1B3, 1B4. Of these, only 1B3 and 1B4 are considered true Scarface varieties worthy of a high premium.
Obverse: Portrait of Liberty centered. On the left are found 7 stars with the words E*PLURIBUS*UNUM followed by 6 stars on the right. The date is positioned at the bottom.
Reverse: The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.
