(1849) Moffat & Co. 16 Dollar Gold Ingot MS Ingot, 20 3/4 Carat, K-3 Values

Details

The only Moffat ingots known in private hands are the $16 monetary ingots. Unlike the earlier Moffat assay ingots, these pieces are only marked with the fineness of 20 3⁄4 carats, and the value of $16, making it impossible to calculate their weight without a scale. At the time these pieces were issued, they were apparently widely referred to as “California Doubloons” due to their denomination. Contemporary reports indicate that $16 Moffat Ingots were not of a consistent weight or fineness when assayed. One example tested in 2017 weighed.931-oz and had a fineness of.879, yielding a gold value (in 1849 dollars) of $16.91.
