Perth Mint - Australia. New Silver Bullion and Proof Coins Features Eleventh Wedge-Tailed Eagle Design
The Perth Mint release their latest silver bullion coins in the wedge-tailed Eagle series.
The series began in 2014 and marked the first time that John Mercanti, esteemed former US Mint engraver designed a coin for the Perth Mint. The new Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle coins became so popular among collectors worldwide that the series has developed into a mainstay of the Perth Mint and among the most anticipated annual releases among collectors. Now in its eleventh year, this very popular series celebrated its tenth anniversary with a special design including all of Mercanti’s depictions on one coin. The common design for the first two years in the series depicted the bird preparing to land on a branch with its wings spread outward. Thereafter, the reverse side changed and depicted the wedge-tailed eagle in a unique original design.
Named for its long, distinctively shaped tail, the wedge-tailed eagle is a majestic raptor indigenous to Australia and Tasmania. With a staggering wingspan reaching up to 2.5 metres or, 8.2 feet, this bird of prey effortlessly dominates the skies above the Australian continent. Known for its tireless high-altitude soaring of up to 2000 metres or 6500 feet and with remarkable hunting prowess, the wedge-tailed eagle's distinctively long, wedge-shaped tail sets it apart from other raptors.

This year’s reverse design portrays a detailed representation of a wedge-tailed eagle with outstretched wings ready to take flight. The design includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE placed above the primary design along the rim with the coin’s year of release and specifications 2025 1 oz 9999 SILVER shown along the lower rim. The Perth Mint’s P mintmark is seen just to the lower left below the eagle’s right talon. The initials JM are placed to the upper right over the eagle’s left wing. The bullion quality coins incorporate an authentication feature on the reverse in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter which is only detectable under a magnifying glass. The proof examples include vivid colour applied to the eagle. The obverse of both bullion and proof strikes includes the Commonwealth effigy of HM King Charles III created by engraver Dan Thorne. The legend surrounding the King’s likeness reads CHARLES III AUSTRALIA along with the denomination 1 DOLLAR shown below the King’s likeness.
