Originally launched for the first time in 2002, this year’s motif the narcissus as it brings colour to nature after the cold winter months, lifting everyone’s spirits. An un-missable spectacle that announces the arrival of spring with a magnificent burst of colour is the mass flowering of narcissus which both brightens the landscape after the cold, dark winter and is a potent symbol of new beginnings. Also commonly known as the daffodil, these flowers bloom anew every year, embodying the eternal cycle of nature and reminding us that life is full of opportunities.

Not just beautiful to look at, the narcissus is also a flower of legend which was first mentioned in ancient Greek mythology. It is the story of Narcissus, the beautiful youth who perished after falling in love with his own reflection in a pool and ended up changing into the flower that bears his name. This story serves as a warning against the dangers of vanity but can also be interpreted as an invitation to self-discovery. Those who recognise and embrace their own light gain true self-confidence – not from arrogance, but from a healthy sense of self-worth.

In the spectacular Ausseerland region of central Austria, the narcissus is celebrated in grand style every year. At the Narzissenfest, Austria’s largest flower festival, the delicate bloom of the star-shaped narcissus takes centre stage. The highlight of the multi-day event is the magnificent parade of elaborate floral sculptures. Carefully crafted with great attention to detail, these figures, ranging from animals and mythical creatures to traditional motifs are paraded through the streets before being gently floated across the lake. As well as honouring the narcissus, the festival celebrates togetherness and the rich traditions of the region. Whether as a radiant highlight in an Easter basket or a lasting addition to a springtime bouquet, the magic of the daffodil serves as a daily reminder that every moment is a new opportunity.

Designed by the Austrian Mint’s senior artisan Helmut Andexlinger, Anna Schlindner and Rebecca Wilding, the obverse of these nine-sided coins features four narcissi in bloom, representing the three species of the flower that are native to Austria. Depicted on the left is the star shaped narcissus (narcissus radiiflorus), while the white daffodil, also known as the poet's narcissus (narcissus poeticus), is depicted in the centre and the wild daffodil, also known as the Lent lily (narcissus pseudonarcissus) is on the right. Above and to the left is the year of issue, 2025. The reverse of the coin shows the coats of arms of all nine of the provinces of Austria along with the denomination of 5 EURO with the numeral centred.
