Political, economic, and psychological factors led to the dissolution of the economic union between Rwanda and Burundi on 1 January 1964. The Banque Nationale du Rwanda (National Bank of Rwanda, BNR), authorized by the Law of 24 April 1964, began operations on 19 May 1964. The Banque d’ Emission du Rwanda et du Burundi rights and obligations were ex officio transmitted to the Royal Bank of Burundi and to the National Bank of Rwanda.
