The Banco Nacional Ultramarino series of Portuguese Guinea in the World Currency contains 310 distinct entries.
On 16 May 1864, the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (National Overseas Bank, BNU) was established in Lisbon as a private issuing bank for Portugal’s overseas territories. Over time, the BNU would issue notes in Angola, Cape Verde, Macau, Mozambique, Portuguese Guinea, Portuguese India, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor.
The BNU’s branch in Bolama, Portuguese Guinea opened in 1903.
In 2001, the BNU was nationalized when it merged with Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the government-owned savings bank, although it continues operations today under the Banco Nacional Ultramarino brand in Macau, where it continues to issue Macanese pataca banknotes. For more information, visit www.bnu.com.mo.
For signatures appearing on Portuguese colonial notes, see Banco Nacional Ultramarino, a separate chapter.
