On 12 June 1898, in the middle of the Spanish-American War (21 April 1898 to 13 August 1898), Filipino revolutionary Emilio Aguinaldo declared an independent Philippine Republic. Neither Spain nor the United States recognized the declaration of independence. Instead Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on 10 December 1898. On 1 January 1899, Aguinaldo was declared president of the Philippines, and the República Filipina was formally inaugurated on 23 January 1899. In the resulting Philippine-American War (4 February 1899 to 2 July 1902), US forces defeated the Filipino insurrectionists and Aguinaldo surrendered on 23 March 1901, ending the republic and replacing it with the territorial Insular Government of the Philippine Islands from 4 July 1901.
