In December 1917, President Venustiano Carranza presented a bill to Congress to create the Banco de la República Méxicana (Bank of the Mexican Republic, BRM), to operate as the nation’s sole bank of issue. This plan was abandoned in September 1919, but it served as the forerunner to the Banco de México.
