On 16 December 1822, the Société Générale pour favoriser l’industrie nationale (General Company for the Promotion of National Industry) was established in Brussels and acquired a de facto issuing monopoly in southern Netherlands, while the Nederlandsche Bank dominated in the north. In 1823, the Société Générale (GEN), as the company was known familiarly, was appointed the state cashier by King William I of the Netherlands.
