About Memel

For earlier issues, see Germany. The Memel Territory (German: Memelland or Memelgebiet; French: Territoire de Memel) was defined by the Treaty of Versailles. Effective 15 February 1920, Memel was detached from the German Empire and established as an autonomous, self-governing territory under the protection of the League of Nations, administered by the French.
