Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle With Motto $20 Gold MS 1908-1933 Values
Details
In 1908, the Saint-Gaudens $20 received a minor design change with the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST just above the sun disk rising from the lower reverse rim. The 1908-1933 Saints are among the most commonly collected of all Saint-Gaudens coins, mainly because of their wide availability and also because many issues from this period of the series are closely tied in price to the prevailing winds of the bullion market. This makes them ideal purchases both for numismatists who are building gold type sets and precious metals investors who buy them purely for their gold content.
While the 1908-1933 With motto Saints are categorically common as a type, there are several scarce and even quite rare issues among this subset of the series. These include the 1920-S, 1921, 1925-D, 1925-S, 1926-D, 1927-D, 1927-S, and all issues made from 1929 through 1933. In fact, the 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagle most recently sold for $7,590,020 in 2002, then becoming the most expensive coin ever sold.
Obverse: Liberty is portrayed standing on a rock, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The word LIBERTY appears on the top periphery surrounded by stars. The date is stamped on the right side of the coin, just above the rock.
Reverse: A crescent sun appears at the bottom as if rising on the horizon with long rays extending to the top of the coin. A flying eagle covers the central portion, atop the rays. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS appear on the top periphery.
