The 18th medal in the U.S. Mint Presidential Silver Medal Series.
Grant was the Commanding General who led the Union to victory in the Civil War. Following the war, he was appointed Secretary of War by President Andrew Johnson. In 1868 Grant ran against Johnson and was elected President, serving two terms and leaving office in 1877.
Obverse: The obverse (heads) depicts a bust of Ulysses S. Grant with the inscription “ULYSSES S. GRANT.”
Reverse: The reverse (tails) features a laurel wreath and the inscriptions “PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES,” “INAUGURATED FIRST TERM MARCH 4, 1869,” and “SECOND TERM MARCH 4, 1873.”
