Obverse: On the silver center, the national coat of arms with the eagle facing left, its feathers resembling plates of armor. On the bronze-aluminum outer ring, the legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS above, with a half-wreath of oak and laurel below.
Reverse: On the center, in front of the Mexican flag, the busts of six young men—the “Boy Heroes,” military cadets from the school in Chapultepec Castle, Mexico City, who were killed defending the castle against the Americans during the Mexican–American War in 1847. Below the central design, NIÑOS HÉROES; above left, the mintmark M; above right, the date. On the outer ring, the denomination N$50 at the top with a half-wreath of laurel below.
