Obverse: Slightly above center, above a spray of oak and laurel, a small national coat of arms depicting the eagle in profile to the left, with stylized, leaf-like feathers and very large feet. The legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS surrounds, with CINCO PESOS below the spray. To the left of the spray, PESO above the coin’s weight (in grams), 27 ª 6; to the right of the spray, fineness LEY / 0.720. At the bottom, the mintmark Mo and 1953.
Reverse: Slightly to right of center, a bust of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in three-quarter profile; in the background to the left, the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Dolores (“Parish Church of Our Lady of Sorrows”). At the top, A«O DE HIDALGO (“Year of Hidalgo”); above the church, 1753 / 1953.
