Obverse: Liberty Head with coronet on which LIBERTY is in raised letters, no star. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding, date below.

Reverse: Large Roman numeral V within heavy wreath of oak and olive, connected at the top by scrolls and ornamented with a six-pointed star (Reverse D of 1867).
