1863 Dime. Produced to study the feasibility of a special coin to take the place of Postage Currency bills. Many alloys and variations including as listed, plus others. The obverse die was also used in 1868 to strike J-644 and related issues. Examples are known 8 grain and 11 grain.
Obverse Description
Small shield at center with crossed arrows behind, wreath around most of perimeter. EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES at border.
Reverse Description
Composed entirely of lettering with: POSTAGE CURRENCY above, ACT JULY 1862 below, with 10 CENTS 1863 at center.
