1861 Copper Pattern $5 PR RD J-283 Values

Details

1861 $5. Pattern proposal for a large-diameter coin intended to eliminate the fraud of hollowing out the center of a gold coin and filling it with lower-value metal, a continuation of Dr. Barclay’s ideas. None are known in gold.

Obverse: Design used in 1860 for J-271, by Longacre, Miss Liberty facing right, wearing Phrygian cap, three stars above forehead, ribbon with LIBERTY at neck, stars surrounding, date 1861 below.

Reverse: Die by Longacre, letter font probably by Anthony C. Paquet. Die used to strike J-271 of 1860; perched eagle holding undulating ribbon in beak inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / FIVE DOLLARS around; V is inverted A.
