1853/'2' $20 Gold MS Values

Details

A die variety of the 1853 doubled eagle with the 3 in the date is punched over another digit. Researches were convinced this was a 2 for many years, but recent research has cast doubt on this fact, so we now aren't quite certain what digit is under the 3. Regardless, the variety is still interesting and collectible.

up This coin is made of 90% gold; 10% copper and has a current melt value of $4,846.99

Obverse: Christian Gobrecht's portrait of Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars with the date centered at the bottom.

Reverse: Shielded eagle with wings outstretched holding arrows and olive branches. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * TWENTY D. appear around the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears below the eagle's tail, above the N in TWENTY.
