Obverse: Portrait of Liberty facing left with a cap and the word LIBERTY on a ribbon above her brow. In a change from the lettered-edge coins, there are now 6 stars on the left periphery and 7 stars on the right side, representing the original 13 colonies. The date appears centered at the bottom.
Reverse: An heraldic eagle holding olive branches and 3 arrows in its claws is surrounded by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. A ribbon below bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The denomination of 50 CENTS is centered below the eagle.
