Wheelchair Basketball Featured on 2027 Half Dollar
Under the provisions of the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330), the U.S. Mint will be offering new designs on the half dollar in a four-year program from 2027–2030.

The reverse design celebrating sports tailored to athletes with a range of disabilities, including physical impairment, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. It will continue to feature a profile of John F. Kennedy on the obverse.
For 2027, the highlighted sport is wheelchair basketball. The Commission of Fine Arts considered a portfolio of designs during its February 19 session. Faced with 14 possibilities, the commission members settled on a design that featured two athletes in a competition but made several recommendations for changes, including the removal of some lettering and moving the placement of the date. Members noted the use of the basketball for the letter “O”, an aspect that was considered to be a creative addition to the coin’s message.

The Treasury Secretary makes the final decision on coin designs. The design portfolio was considered by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee on February 24.
